Name of product

Black Mirror
Target audience
This show is aimed at 17 year olds and onwards, due to the pure variety of episodes that fluctuate the age rating. This show is violent and thought-provoking, therefore, clearly not aimed at a younger audience. Black Mirror also has lots of dark themes that would be too mature for some audiences. Adults who don’t like sensitive content won’t enjoy some of the episodes, however, Black Mirror does have some episodes that just has a good story behind it, such as ‘Nosedive’.
Secondary audience

Black Mirror is watched by some younger viewers under 17, who is influenced by older audiences. For example, adults might have been motivated by the show to want to teach their son/daughter the affects that technology could have in the future. In some ways, people want to educate younger audiences through certain episodes, but not the violent ones. However, friends who are disturbed by the show are given an urge to want to share their experience with others, further expanding the fan base.
What appeals to the target audience about the product (examples and explanations)

Black Mirror is all about the problems in today’s society and the side effects that technology could bring in the future. Famous actors are often included in an episode, such as Bryce Dallas Howard in ‘Nosedive’, which is a big name for the show to feature. This attracts people who are a fan of her, who have possibly watched other media such as ‘Jurassic World’. Black Mirror’s dark themes that no other TV show has ever showed before is the one big reason why the show is so popular – it pushes the boundaries and limitations of what can be broadcasted on TV. Black Mirror reveals the truth of our society, which everyone thinks about, but no one mentions, causing some controversy. The content in Black Mirror is so intriguing and fascinating, that in some ways its aimed at human beings in general. The show is centred around dark and satirical themes. The show touches on important ideas – the false way we sometimes present ourselves online, and our growing addiction to virtual lives – but it was also a touching exploration of grief. The anthology part of Black Mirror is also important – due to each episode having its own unique story that is (in most cases) easy to follow with a good dialogue. Because of this, the show can play around with visual and special effects for an episode. For example, in ‘Men Against Fire’, you have a war story that has some great visual effects such as some ‘creatures’ that they have to kill.
Key influences on the target audience leading them to want to use the product (examples and explanations)

The key influences that lead the target audience to want to watch Black Mirror is similar to the above points. The audience watch the show for the anthological side of it, or the disturbing twists that it has to offer. Social media such as Instagram and Twitter gives the audience an opportunity to discuss and share their thoughts on the show to the public. This also promotes the show to others, influencing others to watch it.

In relation to spending power, the people who like to watch Black Mirror usually don’t pay for streaming services themselves – someone else pays it for them. This is commonly a friend or parent who has a better disposable income. However, this isn’t always the case, as I would say at least half of the audience have good enough disposable income to pay for streaming services like Netflix themselves. The DVD copy of a season is available on websites like Amazon, for £9.99 (UK).
